WELCOME TO THE OCTOBER INSTALMENT OF CRU CLUB

Dear Cru Club,

Written by a human without the assistance of artificial intelligence; a struggle with the page and a battle with words to convey feeling and connection.

Koomilya is a special place in a treasured landscape. It is so much more than simply a beloved vineyard in the Upper Tintara district of McLaren Vale. For me it is a space that delivers clarity and purpose.

Planted to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro, Riesling and Chardonnay by former custodians at time of purchase in 2012, we have since grafted the Chardonnay to Touriga Nacional, grafted the Riesling to Tempranillo, nurtured and planted more Mataro, and removed most of the Cabernet Sauvignon, replacing with Grenache and Malbec. I’ve also pondered removing every Shiraz vine more than once.

For me all great wines obey a set of rules and the most important of these is that wine should have a sense of place. But what of my place in Koomilya’s equation? And does it include Shiraz?
