Alongside the award winners sit two of our popular vintages of the Koomilya JC and Koomilya DC single-block Shiraz, a rare chance to taste the same block, one year apart, side by side. The set is completed by the 2022 Koomilya Estate Shiraz, drawing fruit from across the vineyard's blocks into a single, structured wine.

1. 2025 Koomilya Mataro Rosé
Rosé of the Year, 2027 Halliday Wine Companion
Made from Mataro grown on hundred-year-old vines — the oldest on the property — the Koomilya Mataro Rosé was named Rosé of the Year in the 2027 Halliday Wine Companion. Built for structure and length rather than sweetness, it takes its cue from Bandol, in the south of France, where Mourvèdre makes what Stephen Pannell considers the finest Rosé in the world.

"There are three single-block iterations of Koomilya Shiraz: GT, DC and JC. All are superb, but it is the JC that is cementing its reputation as one of Australia's greatest wines... It's suffused with place, the bush-fringed site, with a sense of fallen gums subsumed into the soil, intertwining with ripe but not juicy deep red fruits, along with a rusty iron note, salumi and panforte. As said, one of Australia's great wines."

Tasted alongside the 2022, the JC's earlier vintage carries the same distinct shape and singularity the block is known for.
"There really are no other wines that taste like the Koomilya Shiraz triad, being utterly individual and beguiling wines of place. This, my pick of the vintage... Deep, brooding, almost bottomless, but it's no cudgel. Dusky red fruits and florals, a deep red cherry scent, blood and iron, licorice, tar, turned humus-rich soil, dried hardy herbs... It's one heck of a wine."

Native ferment, with 16 days on skins; maturation in a 2300L oak vat.
"A certain succulence allied with tension, a play of sour cherry spiced with caraway, tart raspberry confiture, red plum, haunting warm spices, orange-fruity coffee grounds, umeboshi, dried mint and bitter chocolate, and all feeling of fruit, of place, the winemaking subservient. The fruit swoops in on the palate, expansive but serene, with ripples of texture, tannins extracted masterfully, caressing, savoury but not drying, quietly commanding. Brilliant."

The most traditional in feel of the three Koomilya block wines, tasted here one year on from the 2021.
"It's so nice to see these block wines consistently show true to site, while also naturally fluctuating with the vintage. The DC is always the most traditional of feel... but it's as effortless, as delightfully free of artefact as the other wines. Deep of fruit, brooding, but never sweet or rich with it... a bloody ferrousness, feeling of those ironstone-laced soils, old vines and that distinctive Upper Tintara bush block... An excellent wine."

Hand-picked, fermented wild and rested in large, old oak until the edges softened and the layers found their balance — dark and savoury, structured and long, built to age gracefully.
"There's a lovely savory, herbal edge underneath the luscious dark cherry and plum aromas, with anise, dried herbs, grilled meat and licorice. The palate is full-bodied with a textural, precise and focused mid-palate, bright acidity and tightly wound yet refined tannins. A lovely mineral finish. Drink or hold."
