2026 Pinot Blanc
"If a Riesling and an unoaked Chardonnay had a love child, it would be Pinot Blanc — lighter in style, with a fresh, zesty character all its own" SCP
History and Facts
Pinot Blanc is the sister variety to Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris/Grigio, thought to be an offspring or mutation of Pinot Gris. It's a bit tricky to get your head around, but black/red grapes can exist on the same bunch as grey and white berries — if the seed of a white berry falls to the ground and grows a vine, you have a new variety. Grape vines mutate quite easily, which is why there are so many varieties in the world.
This is our first time making a Pinot Blanc. Most literature compares it to an unoaked Chardonnay, and interestingly, Jancis Robinson's Wine Grapes notes that in Burgundy, Pinot Blanc was mistaken for Chardonnay until it was identified as a separate variety in 1868 — so for all the Chablis lovers out there, this one should be right up your alley.
Pinot Blanc is one of the most widely planted varieties in Alsace, where it's produced by houses such as Hugel. It's also grown in Italy, known there as Pinot Bianco, in the regions of Alto Adige and Friuli, and has its largest plantings worldwide in Germany.
